CAZypedia is an encyclopedic resource on carbohydrate active enzymes. It is inspired by, and meant to be a logical extension of, the CAZy database, which "describes the families of structurally-related catalytic and carbohydrate-binding modules (or functional domains) of enzymes that degrade, modify, or create glycosidic bonds."
Content
Although meant to be truly dynamic, in the spirit of the constantly evolving Wikipedia, the first incarnation of CAZypedia will focus on catalogging the structural and mechsnistic "firsts" in each of the CAZy glycoside hydrolase (GH) families. In particular, primary literature will be cited which gives the first identification of enzyme active site residues, catalytic mechanism, three dimnensional structure, or other important work which defines catalysis in a GH family or subfamily. CAZypedia is not meant to be a direct repetition of the CAZy database, nor of the GenBank and UniProt databases, but a distillation of the key work in the field. In keeping with Bruce Stone's original vision, CAZypedia will also encompass entries describing specific catalytic reactions, as defined by Enzyme Commission numbers.
Editorial policies
The editorial policies of CAZypedia will directly mirror those of Wikipedia. CAZypedia will effectively incorporate the Five Pillars that define Wikipedia's character, with some minor changes to better suit the goals of CAZypedia. In short, the Five Pillars are directly incorporated by reference, except that:
- CAZypedia's content, although freely distributable, is not distributed under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Instead, the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 license is applied to CAZypedia content.
- Autobiographies by scientists working in the field may be tolerated, provided they are written from a neutral point of view. The emphasis should be on creating a historical record of the people involved in this contemporary research field. As with Wikipedia, CAZypedia is not a vanity press.
