Takane Katayama is an Associate Professor at Ishikawa Prefectural University in Japan. He received his academic training in Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University. He finished his graduate work with M.S. (1996) and Ph.D. (1999) degrees in bacterial genetics and biochemistry, under the supervision of Professor Hidehiko Kumagai. He did his postdoctoral work at the same laboratory (1999-2001). From 2002 to 2005, he was an Assistant Professor at Kyoto University, where he worked with Professor Kenji Yamamoto and started his career in the field of glycobiology. His major interests are understanding enzymes from the viewpoint of physiology and exploiting enzymes from the viewpoint of application. He has determined the crystal structure of:
