Substrate specificities
The polysaccharide lyase family 7 (PL7) contains 5 subfamilies [1]. All characterized members were active on alginate the anionic, gel forming polysaccharide from brown seaweed such as kelps. Alginate consists of beta-D-mannuronate and alpha-L-guluronate, which occur in homogenous or heterogenous blocks. Bacteria also synthesize alginate for which alginate lyases not only occur in marine but also in terrestrial microbes. Some PL7 prefer regions made of mannuronate others prefer guluronate and the rest does not distinguish.
